The conduit may be protected, while the conductors inside still face moisture. That is why a buyer searching for THWN-2 wire needs to specify the wet-location rating explicitly. A familiar PVC-and-nylon appearance cannot distinguish a properly rated product from a dry-location-only wire.

Inside the cable

The representative copper construction uses a solid or stranded copper conductor, thermoplastic PVC insulation and a thin nylon covering. The complete construction and testing support the designation. Thickness, finished diameter and stranding change with size, so a specification for one AWG size should not be copied unchanged to another. Dual THHN/THWN-2 markings are common, but they remain claims about a particular product.

Where it is used

THWN-2 is used for services, feeders and branch circuits in recognized raceways in wet or dry locations. For buyers supplying commercial buildings, outdoor raceway routes or facilities with moisture exposure, it provides a useful specification starting point. The route, fittings and enclosures still need to match the environment; a suitable conductor does not make an unsuitable wiring system acceptable.

Ratings and selection points

The -2 designation identifies the 90°C wet and dry conductor temperature category. Final allowable current can be lower because of terminals, grouping, ambient temperature and installation rules. Wet-location suitability does not automatically mean direct-burial suitability. Sunlight, oil resistance and cable-tray use also need their own applicable markings. Keep these items separate in the RFQ rather than treating them as one general outdoor rating.

A clearer factory RFQ

For a wet-raceway feeder enquiry, list copper size, stranding, voltage, required THWN-2 marking and any THHN dual marking. Add colour mix, reel lengths, environmental exposure and destination. Request the proposed marking and supporting product documents with the quote so competing offers describe the same item.

Compare the TGS THWN-2 configurations for the available reference size tables. State the required conductor resistance, nominal dimensions, test documents and marking for the exact order. Reference tables and illustrations guide the enquiry; the agreed drawing and approved specification define production.

Manufacturing in Vietnam with TGS

TGS Cable Industrial is a large manufacturing group producing wire and cable in Vietnam. The group has served Costco, Walmart, Target and many other customers for more than five years. That company-wide experience informs our work with importers, distributors and retail supply programmes. For your THWN-2 enquiry, our factory team reviews the construction, destination requirements, quantities and packing before confirming the order.

Frequently asked questions

Can THWN-2 be buried directly?

The THWN-2 designation alone does not establish direct-burial suitability. Choose a construction and marking specifically suitable for the buried installation.

Can a buyer verify THWN-2 from a photograph?

A photograph can show layers and identification. It cannot establish wet-temperature performance, listing status or the scope of a certification file.

Technical references

Manufacturer references explain the representative cable family and construction. They do not certify a TGS product. The agreed order drawing, product marking and applicable approval documents define the supplied cable.
